CAT CONTROL SERVICES

While feral cats are not inherently pests, their presence in certain environments can lead to concerns and issues. They may carry diseases such as toxoplasmosis and cat scratch fever, which can pose a risk to humans. At times they exhibit behaviors perceived as nuisances, such as digging in gardens, yowling, or marking territory. Feral cats can contribute to stray cat overpopulation, leading to more unwanted animals in the same premise.

While addressing feral cats as pests, it's essential to maintain a compassionate approach. Understanding the reasons behind their behavior and seeking solutions that prioritize their well-being can lead to more effective and sustainable outcomes. Balancing pest management with humane treatment is crucial in addressing these issues responsibly. The Trap-Neuter-Return approach is generally recommended as a humane and effective method for controlling feral cat populations. At Hygeia we collaborate with Dubai Municipality Veterinary Services Section, and various other animal welfare organizations, to address concerns about feral cats while promoting their welfare and minimizing harm to the environment.

HOW WE DO IT

  • Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) - This is a humane and effective method for managing feral cat populations. The goal of TNR is to control the population of feral and free-roaming cats without resorting to euthanasia. Traps are used to capture feral cats safely. These traps are designed to be humane, and they do not harm the cat. Traps are baited with food, and once the cat enters, the door closes behind them. After trapping, the feral cat is taken to a dubai municipality veterinary clinic where it is spayed or neutered. This involves surgically sterilizing the cat to prevent further reproduction. Instead of keeping the cat in a shelter, which can be stressful for feral cats, the neutered or spayed cat is returned to its original location. This is an essential part of TNR, as it prevents new, intact cats from moving into the territory and helps maintain the existing social structure among feral cat colonies.
By preventing further reproduction, TNR helps control the growth of feral cat populations over time. TNR programs often involve community education and engagement. Educating the public about TNR and responsible pet ownership can foster understanding and cooperation.

TIPS TO PREVENT CAT INFESTATION

Here are a few tips for cat control:

  • If you have a pet cat, ensure that it is spayed or neutered. This can reduce roaming behavior and prevent the attraction of other cats.
  • Cats are attracted to food scraps, so secure your garbage bins to prevent access. Use bins with tight-fitting lids and consider placing them in areas that are less accessible to cats.
  • If you have outdoor sandboxes or gardens, cover them when not in use to prevent cats from using them as litter boxes.
  • Avoid leaving pet food outside, as it can attract not only your own cat but also neighboring cats.
  • Use physical barriers such as fences or mesh to keep cats out of certain areas.
  • If you have an outdoor cat, create a designated and secure outdoor space like a catio (cat patio) to allow them to enjoy the outdoors without roaming freely.
  • If your cat-related issues involve stray or neighbor cats, communicate with your neighbors. Discuss ways to collectively address the problem, such as encouraging responsible pet ownership or participating in community-based Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs.
